Store-bought tomato plants

If it's too late to start from seed, or if you would rather buy your plants, you can find tomato seedlings for sale in the spring at almost any nursery. Check your local Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot, or other nurseries in your area.

Select healthy-looking plants that don't show any signs of disease or wilting. Green foliage with sometimes purple stems is normal. If the plants have been growing in cooler conditions, it's more likely the leaves will be purple underneath; however, the color will fade as the plants get older.

Choose your varieties and number of plants you want in your garden. It might be a good idea to buy a couple extra plants in case one or two doesn't survive transplanting. However, it's likely that your plants will do fine, and you can give the extras to friends.
